Get a new electricity meter

Introduction

An electricity meter measures the amount of electrical energy consumed by a residential or commercial property, usually in kilowatt-hours (kWh), and enables electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to bill customers based on actual usage while allowing users to monitor their consumption.

What you need

  • An active electricity account number
  • A valid means of identification (e.g., National ID, Voter’s Card, Driver’s Licence, or International Passport)
  • A recent passport photograph

How to apply

  • Visit your electricity distribution company’s website (e.g., EKEDC, IBEDC, Kaduna Electric, KEDCO, Ikeja Electric, JED) to initiate a meter request.
  • Complete the Know Your Customer (KYC) form with the required personal and account details.
  • Create a user account on the portal and fill out the meter application form.
  • Upload all required documents, including valid identification.
  • A technical team will conduct a site survey to assess your property and determine the appropriate meter type (single-phase or three-phase).
  • Based on the assessment, proceed with the application as guided on the platform.
  • Under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme, you will be required to pay upfront or on instalments, while under the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF), the meters are free, but priority is given to Band A and Band B customers.
  • Once payment is confirmed, the meter should be installed within 10 working days.

Payment

The cost of a meter under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme varies depending on the supplier and the type of meter required. However, typical price ranges are as follows:

  • Single-phase meter: ₦115,000 – ₦145,000
  • Three-phase meter: ₦198,000 – ₦258,000
