Introduction
Nigerian citizens can now register and obtain an official birth attestation certificate online through the National Population Commission (NPC) self-service portal. This service is only available once and for adults aged 18 and above.
What you need
- Valid National Identification Number (NIN). Applicants without a NIN will receive a temporary birth ID upon successful application.
- Court affidavit sworn before a Commissioner of Oaths.
- Active phone number and valid e-mail.
How to apply
- Visit the National Population Commission website at https://nationalpopulation.gov.ng/ and navigate to the Birth Attestation under the ‘Services’ menu.
- Click to check the ‘I have read and clearly understood the above guidelines’ at the bottom of the page and select ‘Attestation’ enter your email address in the provided space to receive a payment reference number via email.
- Pay online using the provided secure payment gateway.
- Upon payment confirmation, proceed to fill out the online registration form by entering your details and selecting the nearest registration center. Face capture requires a stable network, good lighting, and a plain background. If you are updating your date of birth, adjust manually following NIN validation. Ensure the new date of birth does not differ by more or less than five years from the original.
- Review and submit your application.
- Use the reference number to track your application status.
- Once completed, you’ll be notified and can download your official birth attestation from your NPC account. Certificates can only be downloaded once after a successful application.
Payment
The fee for a birth attestation certificate is N3,000.00, payable online only.
