Get a student loan


Introduction

The Federal Government has launched the Nigerian Education Loan Fund to provide financial assistance to students of tertiary institutions through a student loan program. The loan is interest-free and is repayable two years after completing the NYSC. Repayments are automatically deducted at a rate of 10% from the beneficiary’s salary by their employer.

What you need

  • Student matriculation number
  • JAMB registration number and admission letter
  • Copy of school ID card

How to apply

  • Visit the NELFUND student loan portal at https://nelf.gov.ng/ to create your account
  • Click on “Apply Now” and then “Get Started”
  • Select “Nigerian” as your nationality. Enter your educational information, including your current institution and matriculation number, and click continue after verification.
  • Verify your JAMB registration number and date of birth, then click “continue” to proceed with account creation.
  • Enter your National Identification Number (NIN) and secure your login credentials. The system will verify your NIN and display your information immediately.
  • Use the valid email address associated with your NIN for account creation. Any other email address will not work.
  • Set a strong password with at least one capital letter, one lowercase letter, one number, one special character, and more than eight characters, and then click “create account.”
  • Check your email for a verification link. Click the link to access the login page.
  • Enter your email address and password to log in.
  • Fill in your personal and contact details, including your phone number, address, and state of residence.
  • Proceed to fill in your educational details such as your university, matriculation number, and other required information. The system will automatically fill in your program type, academic session, course of study, department, and level.
  • Go to account details and enter your BVN, bank name, and account number.
  • Click “Complete Profile Creation.” You’ll see a congratulatory message confirming that your profile has been updated.
  • Click on “Apply for Student Loan.” If it does not work, click ‘Loan’ on the left side of your screen, then select ‘Request for Student Loan’ in the top right corner. You will be taken to the three steps for the loan application
  • Choose if you want an additional upkeep allowance of N20,000.00 per month besides the tuition fee loan.
  • Upload your JAMB admission letter (mandatory) and your school ID card (optional).
  • Review your application and submit it. You’ll receive a notification once your loan is approved.

Payment

The student loan application is free of charge. Applicants are not required to make any payment for the application process.
