Apply for a fresh international passport

Introduction

All citizens of Nigeria either by birth, descent, adoption, registration, or naturalization are eligible for a Nigerian passport, provided they satisfy all conditions prescribed by law. The Nigerian Immigration Service has streamlined the passport application process through an online portal to make it easy for all citizens. The process is fully online, except for biometrics and passport pick-up, for which Nigerians may need to visit the immigration office.

What You Need

  • National identification number (NIN)
  • Passport photograph (that meets ICAO standards)
  • Birth certificate
  • Local government certificate of indigeneship

How to apply

  • Visit the Nigerian passport application portal at https://passport.immigration.gov.ng/.
  • Enter and verify your NIN and date of birth. Ensure you enter the 4-digit captcha in the space provided.
  • Select the passport booklet type and processing office.
  • Upload a passport photo (your photo must be 600×800 pixels with a white background).
  • Fill in your personal details, including marital status, occupation, and email.
  • Submit your contact information, including your address, local government area, email address, hometown, postal code, and phone number.
  • Enter details of your next of kin, such as name, address, and phone number.
  • Upload the required supporting documents, including a birth certificate issued by the National Population Commission or declaration of age from the High Court, and a Local Government certificate of indigeneship. If you have a non-Nigerian passport and hold dual nationality, you will need to upload the data page of your non-Nigerian passport.
  • Make payment and reserve a date for biometrics capture.
  • Visit the immigration office on your chosen date for the biometric capture (applicants outside Nigeria are to visit the mission in their Processing Country for biometric capture)
  • During the process, your reference number will appear. Ensure you keep this number safe for tracking your application status.

Note that upon completing the process your passport will be ready within two weeks and you will receive a passport pick-up notification (via SMS).

Payment

The cost of a 32-page passport booklet with 5 years of validity is N50,000.00 or $130 for those outside Nigeria, while a 64-page passport booklet with 10 years of validity is N100,000.00 or $230, payable online via the payment gateway provided on the portal.
