Obtain a TRCN certificate and teaching licence


Introduction

The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) certificate and teaching licence are mandatory professional credentials for teachers in Nigeria. They certify your eligibility to teach in public and private schools and are often required for employment, promotion, and compliance with national education standards.

What you need

  • Valid National Identification Number (NIN).
  • Scanned means of identification (NIN slip, International Passport, Driver’s Licence, or Voter’s Card).
  • Highest academic qualification certificate (NCE, B.Ed, B.Sc. Ed, PGDE, PDE, Master’s Degree, or PhD).
  • Birth certificate or age declaration affidavit.
  • Recent passport-sized photograph.
  • Teaching qualification certificate, where applicable (e.g., PGDE or PDE for non-education graduates).
  • Active email address and phone number.

How to apply

  • Gather and scan all required documents.
  • Visit the TRCN registration portal and create an account at https://trcn.gov.ng/registration or https://teachers.trcnigeria.ng/
  • Complete your profile using your personal details, NIN, qualifications, and contact information.
  • Upload all required documents and submit your application.
  • Generate a Remita Retrieval Reference (RRR) and pay the applicable registration and examination fees.
  • Submit your application for verification and approval.
  • Register for the Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) after your application is approved.
  • Sit for the PQE during the scheduled examination period.
  • Check your examination result through the portal.
  • Upon successful completion, pay the induction, registration, and licence fees.
  • Attend the induction ceremony where applicable.
  • Receive and download your TRCN certificate and teaching licence

Payment

TRCN fees vary according to qualification category and service type. The following are the total fees for each category, including PQE examination, certificate, three-year license, and induction:

  • Category D (NCE): ₦39,000
  • Category C (Degree/B.Ed + PGDE): ₦58,000
  • Category B (Master’s Degree): ₦74,000
  • Category A (PhD): ₦92,500

Diaspora registration attracts additional charges/fees.
